Original Art: Garth on Cottees Auctions - The Wolfman of Ausensee (F201-F202)

F201-F202 "Wolfman of Ausensee" by Jim Edgar (Author) and Bellamy
A very interesting auction is due to happen on Friday 23 Feb 2018 at 10:00 GMT. The auctioneers is Cottees based in Poole in Dorset (also available via thesaleroom.com)  and they are advertising not one, but two consecutive strips from the Garth story "Wolfman of Ausensee" which originally ran in the Daily Mirror newspaper from 23 May 1972 - 6 September 1972 (#F122-F210)

2 strips with the Daily Mirror letter

I think the auctioneer's estimate of £80-£120 is woefully short considering they could have looked at my blog to see the last few Garths have individually sold for no less than £213 each and that does not include the unique letter from Charles Rogers. It was known that a letter writer might be given  a free strip at the time. Nancy and David Bellamy fought very hard to get the return of their late husband/father's work after his death in 1976, so it would be interesting to know why two Garths were supplied and for what.

The auctioneers's description (oh, and the letter states clearly it certainly was 1972),  is:

Original Frank Bellamy Garth artwork, c.1972: two pieces of pen on board artwork by British comic artist Frank Bellamy for the Daily Mirror comic strip Garth, both measuring 55 x 17.5cm. The lot includes a letter from the Daily Mirror's Cartoon Editor Charles Roger which states 'I have enclosed, as you requested, two originals of the strip as drawn by Mr Frank Bellamy'. Enclosed in original Daily Mirror envelope dated 1972.

F201-F202 "Wolfman of Ausensee" by Jim Edgar (Author) and Bellamy

The full text of the letter, dated 29 November 1972 reads:
Dear Mr. Hunter,
I am obliged for your letter of November 21st.
I am glad to hear that you and your son, Christopher so much enjoy the Garth strip.
I have enclosed, as you requested, two originals of the strip as drawn by Mr. Frank Bellamy.
With kind regards
Yours sincerely
Charles Roger
Cartoon Editor

The story was also reprinted in The Daily Mirror Book of Garth, (London: IPC Limited, 1975) and  Garth Book One: The cloud of Balthus (London: Titan Books, 1984 ). The American fan publication of newspaper strips featured it too in Menomonee Falls Gazette #84 (23 July 1973) - #98 (29 October 1973) - 6 daily strips reprinted in B&W. Garth: Meets the Werewolf  was published by All Devon Comic Collectors Club Daily Strips: Collectors Club Editions No.74  and the latest version was coloured in Daily Mirror Saturday 31 December 2011 to Tuesday 21 February 2012 coloured by Martin Baines.

Here's the page of 6 strips around these episodes from Menomonee Falls Gazette #97 (27 October 1973)

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - Garth: The Spanish Lady (K89)

K89 episode of  "Garth: The Spanish Lady" Drawn by Frank Bellamy
The latest strip by Frank Bellamy that appears on Heritage comes again from "Garth: The Spanish Lady" story. My spreadsheet (here) tells me that these episodes sell for approximately £220-£250 but that all depends on what's in them! I love the ships in this one but especially the clouds done in that brilliant Bellamy "swirl". In case you're wondering Garth has time-travelled to the Elizabethan age and is called Carey - thus the mention in the opening panel.

And reading on to the next panel, we presume the 'gentleman' in the crew has gone as there is no mention of him!

K90 & K91 Garth: The Spanish Lady

Heritage describe this piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth #K89 Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-14-74 (Daily Mirror, 1974). Frank Bellamy drew the exquisite fantasy/time-travel strip, Garth, from 1971 until his death in 1976. This daily, from the story arc "The Beast of Ultor", was done in ink over graphite on Bristol board [sic], and has an image area of 20.5" x 5.25". Aside from some light edge toning, the condition is Excellent. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - Garth: The Spanish Lady (K129)

K129 episode of  "Garth: The Spanish Lady" Drawn by Frank Bellamy
Here's the latest strip by Frank Bellamy that appears on Heritage which comes from "The Spanish Lady" story again.

Heritage describe this piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth #K129 Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-6-76 (Daily Mirror, 1976). Frank Bellamy's meticulously-drawn strips were always vibrant and full of life. In 1971, he began drawing the time-traveling adventures of Garth in the Daily Mirror, which he drew until his death in 1976, just six months after this strip was published. This ink over graphite on Bristol [sic - CS10 in actual fact] daily has an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", and is in Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection..

I love this one as the smoke from the 'fireship' sent towards the Spanish is so vibrant and the black  (almost) silhouette of Sir Francis is highlighted too and leads the eye to the right! A discussion recently on a Neal Adams Facebook page was debating the merits of how he drew a specific X-Men page and how a figure on the right side of the page was turning 'into' the left thus causing - to summarise- a jolt to the 'left to right' reading ability. Here FB shows how to make it work.

I'm adding sales figures when they appear and the previous "Spanish Lady" episode is due to end today (Sunday 22/10/2017). And I see the next one from Ethan Roberts extensive Garth collection is from "The Beast of Ultor" story.

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - Garth: The Spanish Lady (K78)

The Star Inn, Geddington
Here's the latest strip by Frank Bellamy that appears on Heritage which comes from "The Spanish Lady" story which ran originally in 17 March 1976 - 7 July 1976 (K65-K160). It was reprinted in Garth: The Spanish Lady (Daily strips, Garth No. 3), London: John Dakin, Nov 1979 which was an A4 size reprint of 20 pages. It also appeared Garth: The Spanish Lady from the "All Devon Comic Collectors Club Daily Strips" collection - Collectors Club Editions No.3 [No date]. Its latest repint was back in the Daily Mirror newspaper itself  - Daily Mirror Wednesday 8 June 2011 - Tuesday 2 August 2011, coloured by Martin Baines

K78 episode of  "Garth: The Spanish Lady" Drawn by Frank Bellamy

Heritage describe this piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-4-75 (Daily Mirror, 1975). Frank Bellamy was a perfectionist who created some of the best color work to ever appear in British comics. His meticulously-drawn strips were always vibrant and full of life. In 1971, he began drawing the Garth strip in the Daily Mirror, which he drew until his death in 1976. This ink over graphite on Bristol [sic: CS10) daily has an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", and is Excellent condition.
If you're wondering what "Canary sack" is, which Francis Drake mentions in the first panel - Wikipedia comes to our rescue. Sir Richard Grenville has a very exciting biography which I'll leave you to explore.

Oh and before I forget, the reason for showing you the Star Inn, Geddinton is that it appears later in "The Spanish Lady" story, as Tony Smith points out in his article on Frank in the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph of 3 September 1987 (thirty years ago Tony!!)

K67 episode of  "Garth: The Spanish Lady" Drawn by Frank Bellamy
And just in case anyone is still reading this, if anyone around Geddington knows where the building is that appeared in episodes K68 and K69 below, I'd love to know. It could be in Kettering.

Original Art: 2 Garths on Heritage - Garth: Ghost Town (G131) & The Beautiful People (J288)

So last weekend's Heritage auction of a Garth strip nearly hit £500! Is it because I said what a nice piece it is? Am I causing an increase in Bellamy's worth? Well you know what, that's fine with me as I own very little but am glad to see his work recognised!

[All links to the auctions are below in the auction summary]

This weekend there are two Garths and one is a very interesting piece - it comes from Bellamy's favourite Garth story - "Ghost Town", westerns being a favourite genre of his.

G131 episode of  "Garth: Ghost Town" Drawn by Frank Bellamy

The last one from this story that Heritage sold was on 18 June this year and it went for $478 inc. buyer's premium [£373.92 at the time!]. But this one has some classic heroic poses (the nearest one gets, in a comic strip, to a splash page from a comic!) as well as those 'Bellamy swirls'.

The second piece is nice too and comes much later in chronological order, "The Beautiful People"

J288 episode of  "Garth: The Beautiful People" Drawn by Frank Bellamy

Heritage describe the first piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip G131 Original Art dated 4-6-73 (Daily Mirror, 1973). This science fiction strip had a time-travel element to it, which is why today's episode looks more like a traditional Western than the typical spy/adventure-stories of the series. Bellamy really laid on the detail here! Crafted in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", it is in Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

and the second piece:

Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip J288 Original Art dated 6-12-75 (Daily Mirror, 1975). Frank Bellamy was a perfectionist who created some of the best work to ever appear in British comics. His meticulously-drawn strips were always vibrant and full of life. In 1971, he began drawing the Garth strip in the Daily Mirror, which he drew until his death in 1976. This daily, from near the end of his life, has an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", and aside from some light overall toning, the condition is Excellent. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - Garth: The Bubble Man (J214)

I go on holiday where there's no wi-fi or mobile phone signal and Heritage add another Garth strip for sale! And a lovely example of Bellamy's technique of "swirls". I remember on first seeing this story in 1975 how it reminded me of the horror of Quatermass, that quintessential British hero!

J214 episode of  "Garth: The Bubble Man" Drawn by Frank Bellamy

This time Heritage have another Garth for auction, another from the story "Garth: The Bubble Man". the last one I know that came to market was in 2012 and sold for £170, but that was 5 years ago!

Heritage describe this piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip J214 Original Art Comic Strip dated 8-29-75 (Daily Mirror, 1975). Garth uses a pilot's trick to throw the bad guys around. Produced in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.5". In Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.
The whole story is one that has not been reprinted a lot and ran originally in the national UK newspaper the Daily Mirror from 16 August 1975 - 28 November 1975 - (J192-J281)

Garth: The Bubble Man was reprinted by All Devon Comic Collectors Club in their Daily Strips: Collectors Club Editions No.28 [No date]  and more recently coloured by John Ridgway for Spaceship Away (Issue 19, October 2009, to Issue 23 March 2011) and lastly coloured by Martin Baines for the Daily Mirror Wednesday 9 November 2011 to Friday 30 December 2011

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - Robin Hood & Bride of Jenghiz Khan (H264)

This "Robin Hood" appeared in Swift 24 Nov 1956
The Heritage auction this week contains not only another Garth original but also more excitingly, an original from the Swift comic, Robin Hood

They describe the piece, which appeared in Swift dated 24 November 1956, in this way:

Frank Bellamy Swift Vol. 3 #47 "Robin Hood," Episode 29, Page 2 Original Art (Hulton Press, 1956). Never a better Robin Hood than the series created by Bellamy for Swift, a British publication. Each large-scale panel throbs with painterly passion, and the facial expressions, body language, and cinematic compositions are on a par with the famous Robin Hood movie of 1938. The deep horizontal gutters, or white spaces, were designed to contain printed text in the published editions. Ink and greyscale watercolors over graphite on illustration board. Image area, 12" x 15.5". Excellent condition.
To demonstrate how it looked in the finished comic, I dug around in my collection and realised I don't own the actual comic from which this art came. But the one preceding is in my collection, so please enjoy that!.

Swift 17 November 1956 Cover

Swift 17 November 1956
Robin Hood and his Merry Men
Written by Clifford Makin and drawn by Frank Bellamy
Bellamy drew the strip in Swift, a companion comic for younger children, to the famed Eagle comic, from Volume 3:19 - 3:52, 4:1 - 4:8 (12 May 1956 - 29 December 1956, 5 January 1957 - 23 February 1957) and the strip became "Robin Hood and Maid Marian" after that until Volume 4:33 (17 August 1957).

If you want to read the whole of "Robin Hood" pick up a copy of the Book Palace reprint - 134 pages of lovely artwork and commentary by Steve Holland.

H264 episode of  "Garth: Bride of Jenghiz Khan" Drawn by Frank Bellamy

The second auction piece is continuing the story of Jenghiz Khan as outlined already many times on this blog, so there I shall leave it except to quote Heritage:

Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip H264 Original Art (Daily Mirror, c. 1974). An insolent tongue has our hero and his bound topless maiden sidekick chained for vulture fodder on this high contrast thriller, numbered H264. Frank Bellamy is one of the celebrated titans of British comic strip art. This ink over graphite on illustration board daily has an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", and the art is in Excellent condition. Here's another of the Ethan Roberts Collection to be auctioned on Heritage this time from the Garth story "The Beast of Ultor".  Heritage Auctions decided not to hide this behind a sing-in verification despite the art's explicit drawing (very common in the early seventies on TV and newspaper strips!)

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - The Mask of Atacama (G176)

G176 "The Mask of Atacama" Drawn by Frank Bellamy
This is the second of the Ethan Roberts Collection to be auctioned on Heritage in the last month from the Garth story "Mask of Atacama".  Heritage Auctions are trickling out the Bellamy parts of the collection one by one.  Interestingly they decided to 'hide' this behind the login process as it is deemed to have "adult content". So I've done you a favour and shown it here

Heritage describe this piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip G-176 Original Art dated 7-26-73 (Daily Mirror, 1973). This daily strip from the storyline "The Mask of Atacama" is done in fantastic chiaroscuro style by Frank Bellamy, at the end of his career. Produced in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", there is very slight toning and a corner bend. In Excellent condition. Adult content. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - The Orb of Trimandias (F100)

F100 "The Orb of Trimandias" Drawn by Frank Bellamy
"The Orb of Trimandias" story began in the Daily Mirror newspaper on 28 January 1972. The original art from one of the episodes is available from Heritage Auction.  This is a really interesting story that one day I might research a bit further (although I did some work earlier) as it concerns Leonardo Da Vinci and the Borgias. The start of the adventure is when Garth and Professor Lumiére are visiting "Count Giovanni Cometti in the magnificent Palazzo Livorno in Venice". The Count shows Garth an interesting drawing by Da Vinci which is an exact likeness of Garth, but was allegedly of Lord Carthewan, an English adventurer and soldier of fortune from the 16th Century.

Heritage describe the piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth #F.100 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Daily Mirror, 1972). Frank Bellamy had a long and rich career before he took over the long-running comic strip Garth (1943-97) in 1971. He handled the art for this UK series until his death in 1976. Previously Bellamy had illustrated tales in Mickey Mouse Weekly, Swift, Boy's World, Look and Learn, Eagle, and TV Century 21 (where he illustrated many Gerry Anderson creations including the Thunderbirds). This daily from the "Orb Of Trimandias" storyline is wonderfully detailed in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.25". In Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.
This story ran from 28 January 1972 - 22 May 1972 - (F24-F121) and was reprinted several times. The first time was in The Daily Mirror Book of Garth, (London: IPC Limited, 1975) in Bellamy's lifetime. Then it appeared in the American stripzine Menomonee Falls Gazette #67  (26 March 1973) - #83 (16 July 1973) - 6 daily strips on a page. The next time was by Titan Books , Garth Book One: The cloud of Balthus (1984)  and lastly Daily Mirror Monday 3 June  2013 to - Monday 29 July 2013 as a two tier reprint coloured by Martin Baines.

Original Art: Garth on Heritage - Ghost Town (G106)

G106 "Ghost Town" Drawn by Frank Bellamy
"Ghost Town" story began in the Daily Mirror newspaper on 11 April 1973. The original art from one of the episodes is available from Heritage Auction and shows a lovely panoramic shot of a saloon!

Heritage describe the piece:
Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip G.106 Original Art dated 4-5-73 (Daily Mirror, 1973). This science fiction strip had a time-travel element to it, which is why today's episode looks more like a traditional Western than the typical spy/adventure-stories of the series. Bellamy really laid on the detail in that fantastic first panel! Crafted in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.25". In Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.
This story ran from 11 April 1973 - 12 July 1973 (G87-G164) and was reprinted several times. The first time was in The Daily Mirror Book of Garth, (London: IPC Limited, 1975) in Bellamy's lifetime.

However when Bellamy died in July 1976 he was drawing the story "Manhunt" which had yet to appear in the Daily Mirror. Conveniently for the Editor, Mike Molloy, "The Spanish Lady" story in the newspaper was drawing to a close. He decided to run Bellamy's favourite Garth story again - giving him time to see who he could get to replace Bellamy. His successor turned out to be Martin Asbury who was with the strip until its demise many years later

Interestingly, when the Daily Mirror published all the Bellamy stories coloured by Martin Baines, this story ran not only from Saturday 24 September 2011 to 8 November 2011 but again from Friday 25 September 2015 to - Monday 9 November 2015!

"Ghost Town" was also reprinted in Garth Book Two: The women of Galba Jim Edgar, London: Titan Books, 1985. It also appeared in the brilliant stripzine Menomonee Falls Gazette #131 (17 June1974) - #157 (16 December 1974) - 6 daily strips reprinted in black and white.
