Welcome to frank bellamy - the checklist
Frank Bellamy was self taught, starting out in a small Kettering studio, drawing advertising. His break into comic strips came as a result of work he was doing for national magazines (c/o Norfolk Studios) in 1952 when he drew a strip advertising feature "Commando Gibbs" in the Eagle. He must have come to the growing comic market's attention very quickly, as he became a freelance artist in 1953. He was given the The Fleet Family strip in August 1954 in Swift, the sister publication to the million seller Eagle. After 6 strips and three years he was called on to illustrate a living hero on the back page of Eagle: Sir Winston Churchill. Previously only heroes of the past had taken this spot. Naturally creating the full colour strip worried Bellamy, but it has been acknowledged as one of his best over the years. Many full colour (and B&W strips) in comics followed.
